Backup copies of local stack checkpoints are now saved to the user's home directory (`~/.pulumi/backups`) by default. This enables users to recover after accidentally deleting their local `.pulumi` directory (e.g. via `git clean`). The behavior can be disabled by setting the PULUMI_DISABLE_CHECKPOINT_BACKUPS environment variable, which we use to disable backups when running all tests other than the test for this functionality.
