Revert recent merges of #7289 into matrix-org-hotfixes

This was incorrectly merged before it was ready.

This reverts commit aead826d2d, reversing
changes made to 4cd2a4ae3a.

It also reverts commits 9b8212d25, fb3f1fb5c and 2fdfa96ee.
